PROJECT PROFILE

Originally constructed in the late 1820s, the canal included a large basin for the loading and unloading of canal boats via multiple huletts. As commerce evolved the huletts were eventually removed from the site, but salvaged and await their new home as part of this culturally themed park. The joint venture between the Cleveland Parks Department and the Shaker Heights Economic Development Board envisioned a new 18-acre urban park.

Amenities included: A Visitor’s Center with the original hulletts as an anchor feature which included access to elevated pedestrian walkways, and an educational amphitheater; A water feature including emulating the historical rail line and recreations of historical Locks 43 and 44 and a Canal Boat; Active, passive and naturalized park areas and green spaces; A pedestrian tunnel connecting portions of site divided by existing road; public art installations; and a history wall and interactive educational infrastructure to historical fabric of the area A2SO4 was responsible for all facets of master planning and presenting concept to the City of Cleveland.
